My friend who runs the mailing list (courtesy of pepperfish.net) says
there is a bug in the list archiver they use, and he hasn't been able
to find the actual reason. The scrambled messages in the archive are
not encrypted, merely base64 encoded.

He also tells me he expects this to be fixed in a future version of
Mailman, and that he'll be upgrading to that when it gets released.
Until then, the gmane.org archives are probably a better bet. I'll add
a link to them to obnam.org.
